Is the Maxtor Manager Maxtor OneTouch IV really necessary?

I recently got a Maxtor OneTouch IV External HD for my iMac. First Once I hooked up, the manager checked and worked fine. But after the first time I left the question, will not open anymore. E 'icon is in my Dock, but simply does not react at all. But my question is, is really needed for something important? I just wanted the HD to store my videos, movies, images, music, etc. so I'd rather 'of space on my computer today. Not moved manually (drag and drop) and moving through the Manager make a difference? Thanks in advance ~

No, not really necessary. And 'there for users who do not know how to create backup jobs or find tedious to move files manually. you should be able to use it as an external hard disk space.

Sooner or later, something terrible will happen to your hard drive. This is not a very happy thought, but the good news is that you can survive a hard disk failure, with only minimal inconvenience – if you back up files.

Hard Drives Are Not Forever

They can fail without warning, a virus could wipe out your data, fire or flood could damage the unit, or you may be stolen. You could accidentally delete a file or a folder of important files, with a click errant. And not just emergencies to backup important … if you buy a new computer, a backup can make it much easier to copy files from your old computer the new one.
Backup Strategies

You need to back up all your files, or only certain ones? That depends on how you use your computer as the data important, and what you want to think about backup. If the drive fails, you can reinstall the operating system and all your software. But the data that you created and sustained (word processor documents, spreadsheets, email, photos, music, etc.) can not be substituted.

So in a very minimum, you should decide what important files and make backups. Here are some simple ways to back up a set of files:

* Attach the file to an email and send them to a friend. Or open a free web-based email account and send the file to yourself.

* Copy them to another computer on your home or office network.

* Upload them to website, or free web space.

* Burn to a CD.

* Copy them to a flash drive or an external hard drive.

We often – daily, weekly or monthly – you decide based on how often to update the files and how critical it is to have access to the latest data in the event of a crash the hard drive and burns. But be warned that recovery from a hard drive failure will be a nuisance, if you opt for backup data files. It will take several hours to re-install the operating system and all the software you have had. If you downloaded software, you may have lost the license or registration keys with your data, too.

Backup Auto-Pilot

I strongly recommend full backup of the automated system, because everything is safely squirreled away, and data recovery can be achieved with few click. You could back up data to a stack of CD-ROM, but you would need a lot of them to run a modern hard drive can store 100 GB or more. Discs CD-ROM can hold about 700 MB of data, so even with the compression you'd need over 100 of them to get the job done. Is not very convenient, especially if you ever need to restore the data.

Because hard disk drives are cheaper than ever, I recommend you have an external hard drive and use it as a device backup for one or more computers. You can buy a large capacity for an external drive for less than $ 1 per gigabyte. Iomega 33xxx series and get the Maxtor OneTouch a high score of hosts and users, but other manufacturers such as Seagate and Western Digital make good products as well. If you want a drive that supports a USB 2.0 connection, or as Fast FireWire hookup if your system supports.

Backup Software

Backup software is also recommended to help automate the process of creating automatic full or incremental backup, and restore a single deleted file or the entire disk. A good backup program will also allow you to store more versions of a file, so you can go back in time and restore a file to the way it was a day, a week or a month ago.

I use Acronis True Image (Windows) but I heard great things about Retrospect (Windows / Mac), who is free on the Maxtor OneTouch and SmartSync (Windows).

Losing data that you spent countless hours creating one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a computer user. When it comes to backup, not to think too much about whether or not it is worth. It only takes a bit of time and money to automatically create complete system backup that gives you peace of mined and protect against data disasters.
